Space Foundation Discovery Center Announces Fun-Filled Fall Events

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sept. 27, 2023 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983, offering information, education and collaboration for the global space ecosystem, today announced that its Space Foundation Discovery Center will host a series of events in October and November. The sessions will provide a family-friendly way to learn about the wonders of space in a fun and safe learning environment.

The Discovery Center will also host a See You Soon Celebration on Nov. 18 for the Colorado Springs community and extended region to kick off the exciting process of expansion and renovation. From Sunday, Nov. 19 until early spring of 2024, this substantial undertaking aims to rejuvenate the museum, ensuring visitors experience new and exciting opportunities for exploration and learning.

Event: Small Steps, Giant Leap: Moon’s First Friends (for ages 2-5 years)
Date: Tuesday, Oct. 3
Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: No fee
Activities: 
• Reading of “Moon’s First Friends” by Susanna Leonard Hill
• Design and build a moon mobile to take home
• Therapy dogs Brody and Clifford

Event: Homeschool Day: Entrepreneurship
Date: Wednesday, Oct. 4
Time: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General admission plus $5 materials fee. Passport members receive complimentary admission.
Activities:
• Science On a Sphere® presentations
• Self-guided activities throughout the day
• Morning session: Design a Space Business Workshop (grades K-4); Afternoon session: Design a Space Business Workshop (grades 5-12)

Event: Lights Out: Experiencing a Solar Eclipse
Date: Saturday, Oct. 14
Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General admission
Activities:
• Observe the Annular Eclipse of 2023. Families will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses to take home in addition to resources to prepare for the April 2024 total solar eclipse.
• Explore using solar telescopes with Colorado Springs Astronomical Society (CSASTRO).

Event: Discovery Center Astronomy Club: Welcome to the Club! (for ages 15-18 years)
Date: Friday, Oct. 20
Time: 6-7 p.m.

Admission: No fee

• Introduction of club members, activities and goals
• Food and drinks provided

Event: Family Star Party: Planetary Observations
Date: Friday, Oct. 20
Time: 7-9 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: Free outdoor telescope viewing; half-price admission for Discovery Center indoor activities. Passport Members receive complementary admission.
Activities: 
• Look through multiple telescopes and learn about the objects in our night sky from Colorado Springs Astronomical Society astronomy outreach guides and Discovery Center educators.
• Possible views of Jupiter, Saturn and the Gibbous Moon.
• Engage with self-guided activities and Science On a Sphere® presentations.

Event: Tesla’s Toolbox: Engineering Design (for ages 7-14 years)
Date: Saturday, Oct. 21
Time: 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General admission plus $5 materials fee. Passport members receive complimentary admission.
Activities:
• Participate in morning and afternoon workshops to design and build your own mini powered rover using various components. We will then test the rovers.

• Enjoy our spooky gallery decorated for Halloween and a special Halloween scavenger hunt.
• 10:30-11:00 a.m. 3D printing activity ($5 additional cost)
• 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Safe trick or treating
• 2:30-3:00 p.m. 3D printing activity ($5 additional cost)

• Engage in spooky activities and create some Halloween science — fog bubbles, spooky vibrations, Witches’ Brew, alien eyeballs, creepy slime, and glowing worms.

• Morning workshops: Science On a Sphere® presentation and Sphero Indis challenges (grades K-4); Afternoon workshops: Science On a Sphere® presentation and Create a propeller car (grades 5-12)
• Self-guided activities throughout the day, including creating binary bracelets and coding mazes

Event: Tesla’s Toolbox: Circuits (for ages 7-14 years)
Date: Saturday, Nov. 1
Time: 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Activities:
• Assemble your own functioning electrical circuit with a light bulb, then construct a model telescope using their circuit system. Be prepared to select images of the universe to incorporate into their satellite design.

• Discuss tips for college admissions as well as how to explore the various careers in STEM. Bring questions relating to college admissions, picking majors and courses, finding internships, college culture and student life, and more.
• After the club meeting, stay for some astronomical observing at Family Star Party.
