Space Foundation Discovery Center Announces Fun-Filled Fall Events
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sept. 27, 2023 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983, offering information, education and collaboration for the global space ecosystem, today announced that its Space Foundation Discovery Center will host a series of events in October and November. The sessions will provide a family-friendly way to learn about the wonders of space in a fun and safe learning environment.
The Discovery Center will also host a See You Soon Celebration on Nov. 18 for the Colorado Springs community and extended region to kick off the exciting process of expansion and renovation. From Sunday, Nov. 19 until early spring of 2024, this substantial undertaking aims to rejuvenate the museum, ensuring visitors experience new and exciting opportunities for exploration and learning.
Event: Small Steps, Giant Leap: Moon’s First Friends (for ages 2-5 years)
Date: Tuesday, Oct. 3
Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: No fee

• Design and build a moon mobile to take home

Event: Lights Out: Experiencing a Solar Eclipse
Date: Saturday, Oct. 14
Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Activities:
• Observe the Annular Eclipse of 2023. Families will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses to take home in addition to resources to prepare for the April 2024 total solar eclipse.
• Explore using solar telescopes with Colorado Springs Astronomical Society (CSASTRO).

Admission: Free outdoor telescope viewing; half-price admission for Discovery Center indoor activities. Passport Members receive complementary admission.

• Look through multiple telescopes and learn about the objects in our night sky from Colorado Springs Astronomical Society astronomy outreach guides and Discovery Center educators.
• Possible views of Jupiter, Saturn and the Gibbous Moon.
• Engage with self-guided activities and Science On a Sphere® presentations.

Event: Tesla’s Toolbox: Engineering Design (for ages 7-14 years)

• Participate in morning and afternoon workshops to design and build your own mini powered rover using various components. We will then test the rovers.

• Assemble your own functioning electrical circuit with a light bulb, then construct a model telescope using their circuit system. Be prepared to select images of the universe to incorporate into their satellite design.
