Come to the Curiosity Rover 5th Birthday Party at the Space Foundation Discovery Center on Saturday, Aug. 5

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 2, 2017) – The mission began Nov. 26, 2011, when the Curiosity rover was launched from Earth on a nine-month journey to the red planet. After a daring landing on Aug. 5, 2012, the rover was safely on Mars, ready to explore. Curiosity is well known for inspiring today’s youth with its personable social media presence and ability to take “selfie” photos.

To celebrate the fifth year of Curiosity landing on Mars, the Space Foundation Discovery Center is throwing the rover a birthday party on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017. The day will feature several STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) activities and a social media selfie giveaway.

Activities include:

  • Make an edible rover
  • Curiosity Challenge: Can you do what Curiosity does?
  • Martian rover races
  • Sign a giant birthday card for Curiosity

The #CuriosityBirthdaySelfie Giveaway began on July 5, 2017, and features a prize package valued at over $100, filled with Martian goodies. See the giveaway prizes, and the full Terms and Conditions, here. All activities are included in regular Discovery Center admission.

Curiosity’s 5th Birthday Party is part of the Discovery Center’s Summer of Discovery programming. The theme for summer 2017 has been Space Food: Our Future Food Source, and will wrap up on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, with the Harvest Festival. The summer began with a vote of which crop we would grow in our hydroponics system, and lettuce was the winner chosen by our visiotrs. The lettuce will be harvested, and a taste test will be available for guests to the Discovery Center that day.
