Space Foundation Discovery Center Hosting Family-Friendly Events For January

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Dec. 16, 2022 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit advocate organization founded in 1983 for the global space ecosystem, today announced that its Space Foundation Discovery Center will host a series of events for January. The events will provide an opportunity for the whole family to engage and learn more about the wonders of space in a fun and safe learning environment.

Event: Small Steps: Giant Leap: Planets/Solar System (for ages Pre-K-Kindergarten)
Date: Tuesday, January 3
Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: No fee
Activities:
• Reading of 8 Little Planets by Chris Ferrie
• Guided Science On the Sphere® presentation
• Solar System button activity

Event: Homeschool Day: Aerodynamics: rockets, flight and motion
Date: Wednesday, January 4
Time: 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General Admission plus $5 materials fee. Passport members receive complimentary admission.
Activities:
• Science On a Sphere® presentations
• Morning workshop: Hoop gliders and paper airplanes, afternoon workshop: Pitsco rockets
• Self-guided activities include puff rockets and Newton’s Laws demonstrations

Event: Tesla’s Toolbox: Robotics (for ages 7-14 years)
Date: Saturday, January 14
Time: Workshops from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., and 2:00-3:00 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General Admission plus $5 materials fee. Passport members receive complimentary admission.
Activities:
• Understand the use for robots and the basics of how to control them with code
• Activities and challenges for the Sphero Robots
• Build a mini robot

Event: Cool Science: Catapults
Date: Wednesday, January 21
Time: 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General admission
Activities:
• Learn about the science behind catapults to prepare for the Mini Fruitcake Toss in Manitou Springs on January 28
• Build a mini marshmallow catapult

Event: Discovery Center Astronomy Club (for ages 15-18 years)

Time: 5:00-6:00 p.m.

• Guest speaker from Colorado Springs Astronomical Society to talk about imaging objects in the night sky
• Present findings on mini-journal club

Event: Family Star Party: Ancient Astronomy
Date: Saturday, January 27
Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: No fee for outdoor telescope viewing; half-priced admission for Discovery Center indoor activities.
Activities:
• Look through multiple telescopes and learn about the objects in our night sky from Colorado Springs Astronomical Society astronomy outreach guides and Discovery Center educators
• Possible views of Venus, Jupiter, the crescent Moon, Mars and Orion
• Self-guided activities and Science On the Sphere® presentations in the Discovery Center
