Space Foundation Discovery Center Announces Events for December

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Nov. 29, 2022 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit advocate organization founded in 1983 for the global space ecosystem, today announced that Space Foundation Discovery Center will host a series of events for December. The events will provide a fun, family-friendly environment for families to learn about the wonders of space.

Event: Family Star Party: NORAD Tracks Santa & The Messier Catalogue
Date: Friday, December 2
Time: 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: No fee for outdoor telescope viewing; half-priced admission for Discovery Center indoor activities. Passport members receive complimentary admission.
Activities:
• Look through multiple telescopes and learn about objects in our night sky from Colorado Springs Astronomical Society outreach guides and Discovery Center educators
• Engage with self-guided activities and Science On a Sphere® presentations in the Discovery Center

Event: Cool Science: Color Changing Magic
Date: Saturday, December 3
Time: 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Event: Small Steps, Giant Leap: The Sun (for ages Pre-K-Kindergarten)
Date: Tuesday, December 6
Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: No fee
Activities:
• Reading of Sun: One in a Billion by Stacy McAnulty
• Guided Science On the Sphere® presentation featuring images from the book
• Create-a-Sun craft

Event: Homeschool Days: Coolest Missions in Space
Date: Wednesday, December 7
Time: 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General admission plus $5 materials fee. Passport members receive complimentary admission.
Activities:
• Look at all the coolest current missions in space including NASA, SpaceX, Webb Telescope and more
• Guided Science On the Sphere® presentations
• Guest speaker Ambre Trujillo, Space Foundation social media & marketing specialist, NASA Solar System Ambassador
• 11:00 a.m. workshop: Europa Clipper Model, 2:00 p.m. workshop: Orion Capsule challenge
• Self-guided activities include Ingenuity model and Mars coding

Event: Discovery Center Astronomy Club (for ages 15-18 years)

Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m.

• Work privately with Colorado Springs Astronomical Society astronomers to hone astronomy skills
• Learn to use constellations and asterisms to navigate the night sky

Event: Tesla’s Toolbox: Gravity (for ages 7-14 years)
Date: Saturday, December 10
Time: Workshops from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

Admission: General admission plus $5 materials fee. Passport members receive complimentary admission.

• Experiment with fabric gravity wells and weights

Event: Apollo 17: 50th Anniversary, Last Footprint on the Moon
Date: Saturday, December 17
Time: 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs

• Apollo 17-themed escape box (reserve upon entry at museum)
• Moon-themed Science On the Sphere® presentations
• Presentations from Discovery Center docents who worked on the Apollo program
• Build a colony on the Moon with Space Foundation’s original Moon Colony Kit – a gamified experience
