Space Foundation Discovery Center Announces Events for a Magnificent May

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — April 27, 2023 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit advocate organization founded in 1983, offering information, education and collaboration for the global space ecosystem, today announced that its Space Foundation Discovery Center will host a series of events for May. The events will provide an opportunity for the whole family to engage and learn more about the wonders of space in a fun and safe learning environment.

Event: Small Steps, Giant Leap: Aliens (for ages 2-5 years)
Date: Tuesday, May 2
Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: No fee
Activities: 
• Reading of Welcome to Alien School by Carol Hart and Ed Eaves
• Guided Science On a Sphere® presentation
• Handprint Alien Activity

Event: Homeschool Day: The Science of Star Wars® & Science Fiction (For K-12)
Date: Wednesday, May 3
Time: 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General admission plus $5 activity fee. Passport members receive complimentary admission.
Activities: 
• Learn how science fiction can inspire and predict facts
• Science On a Sphere® presentations
• Morning and afternoon workshops
• Self-guided activities include Origami Starships and Fact or Fiction

Event: May the Fourth Be with You: A Celebration of Star Wars® Popular Culture
Date: Saturday, May 6
Time: 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General admission plus $5 activity fee. Passport members receive complimentary admission.
Activities: 
• Star Wars® Science On a Sphere® presentation
• Dress as your favorite Star Wars® character
• Workshops include building a miniature lightsaber and creating an R2D2 craft

Event: Tesla’s Toolbox: Medieval Mechanics (for ages 7-14)
Date: Saturday, May 13
Time: Workshops at 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 2:00-3:00 p.m.
Venue: Space Foundation Discovery Center, Colorado Springs
Admission: General admission plus $5 activity fee. Passport members receive complimentary admission.
Activities: 
• Learn how humans mastered the science of launching objects with catapults and trebuchets, then build your own to take home

• Participate in teaching activities and professional development sessions
• Learn about Space Foundation’s Teacher Liaison program and how to apply

Activities: 
• Possible views of the Beehive Cluster, Mars and Venus
• Self-guided Science On a Sphere® presentations
• Mobile Earth + Space Observatory’s scientific demos and exhibits
• Look through multiple telescopes and learn about the objects in our night sky from Colorado Springs Astronomical Society astronomy outreach guides and Discovery Center educators.
