Space Foundation and Pueblo Community College Host Space in the Community Event
STEM-Focused Family Event Supported by L3HarrisÂ
COLORADO SPRINGS and PUEBLO, Colo. — Feb. 27, 2025 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983 to advance the global space community, in partnership with L3Harris and Pueblo Community College, is excited to announce Space in the Community, a day-long celebration of space exploration and STEM learning. This exciting, family-friendly event will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Pueblo Community College, 900 W Orman Ave., Pueblo.Â
“Thanks to the generous support of L3Harris, we’re excited to bring Space in the Community to Pueblo, inspiring students, teachers and the community” said Melanie Stricklan, executive director of Space Workforce for Tomorrow at Space Foundation. “This program shows the power of partnerships in advancing STEM education and creating opportunities for the next generation.”Â
The event’s theme, Orbital Space Debris, will immerse students in hands-on STEM activities focused on space science and technology. These engaging activities are specially designed for elementary and middle school students from Pueblo School Districts 60 and 70 and will be guided by expert educators from Space Foundation. Through close collaboration with Pueblo Community College and grant funding from the L3Harris Foundation, Space Foundation can offer this event free of charge to participating students and their families.Â
“L3Harris recognizes the importance of educating today’s youth and aims to inspire young people through activities like Space Foundation’s upcoming Space in the Community event in Pueblo,” said Ed Zoiss, president, space and airborne systems, L3Harris. Â
Event HighlightsÂ
- Meet Astronauts: Engage with former NASA astronaut Lt. Col. Duane ”Digger” Carey, USAF (Ret.) who piloted the Space Shuttle Columbia on the STS-109 mission in 2003.Â
- STEM Activities: Participate in a Sphero debris obstacle course, track orbital debris with Ozobots, build circuit satellites with sensors, and explore community booths.Â
- Family Fun for All Ages: Enjoy engaging, educational activities designed to inspire curiosity and passion for STEM fields.Â
- Interactive Learning: Experience the latest in space science and technology through exhibits and hands-on demonstrations.Â
Teachers will also take part in a hybrid teacher professional development workshop led by Space Foundation’s STEM education specialists on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The workshop will focus on space education STEM lesson plans and provide materials to help teachers easily integrate these lessons into their curriculum. The goal is to boost teachers’ confidence in incorporating space-based STEM approaches into their classrooms.Â
