Space Foundation Leverages Harris Corporation Grant for February STEM Education Program in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 8, 2018) – Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has provided a grant to collaborate with the Space Foundation on a program that will further science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) studies in several Colorado Springs schools Feb. 28-March 3.

The Space Foundation’s Space in the Community is an immersive program for students, parents, teachers and community members, designed to inform and inspire them about space and also reinforce the importance of STEM. Harris will sponsor Audience with an Astronaut presentations with former NASA astronaut Lt. Col. Duane “Digger” Carey, USAF (Ret.), at participating schools, including Academy Endeavor Elementary, Coronado High, Discovery Canyon Campus Elementary, Evans International Elementary, McAuliffe Elementary and Wildflower Elementary.

The goal of Harris’ collaboration with the Space Foundation is to interest younger students in considering STEM careers and taking courses in high school that will position them to successfully pursue STEM studies in college. In the last 10 years, Harris has dedicated more than $22 million to support STEM education projects and initiatives on the elementary, middle, high school and university levels. Harris employees across the U.S. have volunteered thousands of hours supporting STEM education in local classrooms and hosted hundreds of students at Harris facilities. Harris Space and Intelligence Systems President Bill Gattle has demonstrated his commitment to STEM by joining the Space Foundation Board of Directors. In 2016, Harris supported very successful Space in the Community events in Brevard County (Fla.) public schools.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for local educators at the Space Foundation and space experts at Harris to show how compelling STEM studies can be,” said Chris Forseth, vice president and general manager at the Colorado Springs-based Harris Space Superiority business. “I’ll bet there are future rocket scientists sitting in the classrooms we will visit or at the Community Night we will host at the Discovery Center.”

The Space Foundation’s Space in the Community program can be delivered in any community in the country, allowing a funder to have an impact where its employees live, play and work. The program can be tailored from a menu that includes: astronaut presentations at schools, classroom hands-on activities, teacher professional development workshops and community speaking engagements.
