Event Details:

John Glenn became the 1st American to orbit Earth 60 years ago on February 20, 1962. In 4 hours and 55 minutes, he circled the globe three times in Friendship 7, his space capsule. The feat made Glenn a national hero and a household name.

Celebrating space milestones of the past only makes us more aware of the space milestones yet to come… some of which will be coming soon:

  • First image from James Webb Space Telescope
  • First woman on the Moon
  • First crewed mission to Mars

The history of space exploration is the spark that ignites the imaginations of today’s youth who will make humanity’s future space firsts.

Special John Glenn Activity:

  • Bringing future astronauts into the kitchen!

John Glenn was particular about a great many things, which can be understood as an astronaut needs to be precise in all they do.

Did you know? John Glenn was also very particular about his dessert. He loved a particular Chocolate Loaf Cake.

Special Activity at 11 a.m.

In honor and celebration of John Glenn, the day’s special activity will be having young explorers make — and bake — their own version of John Glenn’s favorite chocolate cake.

While the cakes are baking, there will be a special presentation about John Glenn in our Science On a Sphere® theater.
